Malayne's Life At The Click Of A Button

Called to Lead
One more time…

I am sitting in our chev truck, driving 100km/h attempting to reach out desination within 12 hours, or at least through the night, with my brother and my mom in the back and Jim on the wheel swiftly passing by the trees and water, thinking, wishing, and crying. I am remembering. Remembering my Kaleo family that I saw only hours ago. Remembering their faces and eyes filled with tears and sad regrets of leaving our home. Remembering the joy of the Lord and how he is Good to me. Remembering how He has been so faithful to me these last months, And remembering that he will continue to be faithful to me for the rest of my life. Thanking Him for what he has done for me is all I can do. Thanking him for the challenge, for the sweat and tears, for the laughter and love, for the pain and heart break, for the uncertainty that has become certainty, and for the love that has carried with me for Him, and for people. Thank you God. Thank you Lord Jesus for breaking my heart, for renewing my soul, for ruining me for the ordinary, and for not settling for the norm.

In the beginning of the year while sailing on S.A.L.T.S, I was given the Kaleo name of “sure”. ‘Sure of what?’ you may ask. It means being sure of Christ and what he can do in people’s lives, being sure of myself, and surrendering my life completely over to him. With that comes the act of trust. Trusting him with your life and the outcome of it. I have come far since being named “Sure”. Although it is the biggest process of your life and I will never stop changing and growing, it is something that I desperately want and so, I will seek after that with perseverance and persistence.

With everything concluding for the year, we sat one last time in the Pacific Woods Lounge in our Kaleo six circle. We wanted to give each other a reminder of how to pray for one another throughout the year and beyond. We gave ourselves a word or phrase that would signify what we wanted to deepen in, in our walk with Christ. I personally asked for “BOLDNESS”. Boldness for this summer with my young life students. To be boldly silent and boldly still in Christ. To be bold in courage and bravery, and to be genuine in my boldness. The authenticity of boldness comes from God and God alone. My dear friend Miranda writes to me, “ Though at times you may be fighting against a foe, who seems too strong for you to take courage in, knowing that your strength comes from the Father. You are not really the one fighting, He is. Let him do his work.”

As sad as I was to leave my ridiculous bubble, I am joyous. My amazing friend Jonathon said something that I wasn’t sure if he was using sarcasm in his voice, or if their was truth behind his words, but he said “Kaleo is not reality. It is a state of mind.” He was right. Kaleo is not the reality of life. It is a preparation and training for life. I am joyous to go back into the real world (aka secular world-haha) and give the people the same love that I have…Thinking of the reality of Christ love is incomprehensible. But, my challenge for my self is to find out what that love means and to give it to God’s people. Now that is a bold request….
The one thing that I have learned to love the most is laughter. I don’t think I have ever smiled and laughed so much in my entire life. Even the corkiest, most silly things made me laugh. I have had the greatest pleasure of partaking in 8 months of laughter with my friends. I cannot even describe how amazing these people are and how far they have come. It was an honor living with my 27 new best friends and getting to know them for who they really are.

I was trying to find a certain piece of scripture that suited my concluding paragraph, but cannot seem to find it. However, one that comes to mind is in John 20:21, which says, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Enough said I think.
God is Good. Thank you for appreciating and taking the time to read my blog. It has brought me great joy knowing that I am not just writing this for the sake of a grade, but because it gives you an appreciation for Christ and the acknowledgement of change in a person’s life.

Praise God from all whom blessing flow, praise him oh creatures here below, praise him above ye heavenly host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen,

Signing out for the last time,

Here I come, ready with boldness and the armor of Christ.

Blessing to you

Kaleo Ministry

So considering what time it is, which is 11:22 pm, I don’t have much time to write this blog before it reaches tomorrow. But I would like to give you all a quick update on what has happened this last week and what is about to happen this week.

Monday started off with a drive down to Tofino. We enjoyed the sunshine and the rain, the smell of the ocean and the smell of chicken dinner.

It was a great 2 days of surfing. Apparently the waves were 30 feet, according to Jim. But I on the other hand wouldn’t know because I decided not to surf. Instead I enjoyed spending my time on the beach with Shannon and Miranda discussing consumerism and reminiscing about the past and the future. Interesting topics I must say. I will miss those chats.

We managed to arrive back to camp on Wednesday just before supper. We ate quickly and then the warmland crew booked it over to the church to lead the youth group. Unfortunately it was our final last youth group of the Kaleo year. We had a farewell cake for the six of us and played games with the kids that kept us busy all night. It was a great way to kick off the end of the year. I will miss those kids.

On Thursday at around 11:00 8 of us students left for the amazing white water KAYAKING adventure. It was great. Although we were more in the calmer parts of the water (not so much rapids) we had some good fun. Lots of splashing, kicking, swimming, laughing, and only one occurrence of being slapped in the face by a tree (poor Jeremiah). We were out there for about 3 hours with two really great guides. I will miss those guides

Last but not least, we had a Friday morning chapel to celebrate Jesus. We read the story of the crucifixion as the bible was passed around the circle. Our chapel was down at the dock. Perfect sunny weather too. My roommate Jayme shared her testimony. It was beautiful. I love her and will miss her. And I will also miss those amazing dock chapels

Saturday. Lets just say I stayed up way too late doing…nothing. Well not nothing. But nothing that is productive, like say…finishing my 2500 word essay. I think I got about 500 words in before I called it quits. Luckily I finished it today. No more papers! I will NOT miss writing papers.

And that concludes Malayne’s weekly update. Thank you for reading.
..whoa..this is potentially my last blog. NO! It can’t be. Please don’t think this is the end just yet. I will post my final blog SATURDAY night. Saying goodbye to my fellow readers. That will be a sad moment. I will miss blogging
Until Saturday,

Malayne

Kaleo Ministry

I sit here, outside on the porch, basking in the lovely +15 sunny weather, while of course listening to Jack Johnson (can't go wrong with Johnson, classic summer music), thinking of where to start first. A lot of interesting and unexpected things have occurred throughout this week. Good and Bad. So without anymore delay, I will try to touch on these subjects as promptly as possible.

Although what i am about to write is not in correct order of the week, i feel like i should share this news first because it is amazing! This weekend, the camp had a juniors retreat stay for 3 nights. The name of the retreat was called "A super good feeling!"-haha. A lot of the Kaleo (as well as myself) participated in helping run the programs and give our time to kitchen help and dishes so the camp could run somewhat smoothly. A girl named Grace that is apart of John, Leila, Jayme and Danielle's youth group decided to sign up and come on staff for the weekend. She helped me, and along with others in the dish pit. Grace has been around here for a while, coming out every now to hangout with us. It has been an amazing blessing having her here. She is such an incredible girl. This weekend she had decided to committ her life to Christ. I must admit. I have never seen anyone so happy and rediculosly over-joyed. She was overflowing with Joy. She wanted to tell anyone and everyone what she had done here at camp this weekend. Kylie was given that opportunity to be apart of Grace's committment to the Lord. "Before I would have to hide my bible under my bed because I was so scared...but now, I feel no judement. I want to tell the world" is what Grace said to me afterwards. I deffinitly teared up a bit. Her life is going to be so different and I am so excited for her. I am excited for her to struggle and know that she has Christ with her. I am excited for her to share the Lord with her friends and family, and I am so exicted that she is now apart of our family. What a super GOOD feeling- haha! One more thing that Grace said to me and a few other girls, today actually was, "Isn't Jim Badke done?" what she meant was, isn't he done with learning about God. That was a pretty sweet thing that she asked, because even though as wise and experienced as Jim Badke (our Kaleo lealder) is, we never stops learning about the mysteries and works of God. Each day is something new, and each day is so beautiful. You never know what God is going to do for you with  you.

Anyways, that was mainly my amazing news...so what else happened this week. oh right..CLASS
Last week was our official last class for the year. Apparently what we learned was worldviews of society and worldviews of Christians and how they are significantly different and completley counteract each other. I must say. I really struggled with it. Not because it was hard or felt like i could not comprehend it, but because my mind was lost. Seriously, I don't know where it was, but i literally do not remember anything about that class, which (for lack of a better word) sucks. One quote that I remember which is quite famous is, " I think, therefore I am"- Rene Decartes. A man of complete disaster (that is one thing i know). His views were rediculous. Something that our professor told us on what that quote should really be is, "I love, therefore I am." I am not sure if I fully understand this but if I am on the right path i think that means, to have love in your life, which is Christ's love and how you use that, then the "I am" part means we exist because of God. which is by far a whole different level than what Descarete is thinking. I thought it was a pretty cool quote. Brings forth depth to your thoughts at least.

This week we are off from Monday until Wednesday evening to Ucluelet again to go surfing and hangout. We are actually going back to Tofinio to surf but staying in Uclulet at the same church that our mission's team stayed at. It has come at a perfect time. I think we all need a few days to hangout and be together. We still have some papers to write when we get back, but i guess we will worry about that when the time comes. So surfs up!

So i am excited for this week, excited to hangout and spend the time we have with the people i love before it is time to leave. Excited for God to reveal new things, excited to learn and to laugh.

Blessings

Kaleo Ministry

To start off before I dive into what will probably be way to long of a blog, I would like to say hello. How are you? I have had a wonderful three weeks with my E.P.I.C missions team. It was quite the journey, but despite the fact that all four of us ended up getting ill with some sort of bacteria, we strongly persevered through and came out feeling refreshed. Vancouver came to be a very powerful experience for me in the aspect of reconciling past hurts and surrendering them completely over to God. I don’t think I truly knew how to do that until then. Ucluelet was amazing. I had a great time getting to know the local kids that lived on the reserve there, and Copper Isalnd was so great too. Being surrounded by creation and nothing else, having amazing fellowship with your elders, and reflecting on what God has done for you was all apart of the journey.

So first things first…

Vaaaancouver…where to being? I guess ill pretty much give ya’ll a play by play of what went down. So we headed off at around 9:00am to catch the 10:00 ferry into Horseshoe bay. We arrived to the entrance of the building where Jenny (runs the safe house “Inner Hope” along with Carla) picked us up and brought us back to the house. She gave us a run down of the week and it was looking pretty promising and exciting. We arrived to the house where we were warmly greeted by some of the aboriginal young adults that lived in the house. Mercedes, Ericka, and Gage are their names. During the six days that we were there, we did a lot of random jobs around the house like shovel the driveway, clean the garage (like nobody’s business), do a lot of painting in the entrance way, hall way, and in a bedroom, and organize under the stairs. It certainly kept us busy which I’m glad. It brought us great conversation and constantly benefited the group dynamics…We got to know each other a lot more which was so amazing. I couldn’t of asked for a better group.

The next day, Jenny explained to us that we would be hosting a chapel at the UGM on East Hastings street for the homeless. Now UGM, which stands for Union Gospel Missions, is an organization that helps drug addicts and people who deal with alcohol get off the streets of Vancouver. They provide services for the people that encourage them to change their lives for the better, with the mentality of seeking Christ throughout that process. They have two services a day that fill about 150 men and women and they are usually half an hour each. After the service the people are welcomed to a hot meal in the kitchen. UGM also provides woman’s shelter and services as well. The whole organization takes up about a block of East Hastings Street itself. So on Monday, we put together an interactive game for the people and they could win prizes for answering the right question about the sermon that was talked about. We spoke about John 10:1-18 “The Good Shepherd and His Sheep.” The prizes went anywhere from laundry soap to chess board sets and note pads. It was a fun variety and they really loved it.
There is a program called “Say Yes” which I believe is connected with a church called New Beginnings in the downtown area. The program is run by a pastor and his wife. They run it from Tuesday to Thursday every week. It is a tutoring program for kids usually ages 8-12 where they learn about the bible, get a fed a good meal which they may not get at home, take them to the park, help them with their school studies and usually do a craft to end off the day. It was really cool to watch the kids immediately connect and cling to us after the first day. One of the girls named Arlain told me I was the “cool girl leader” so she asked me to come hangout with her and her friends haha. We went into a separate room from the rest of the kids and the girls let lose (conversation wise). I got to hear a lot about their lives. I learned that none of them, not a single one grew up with a father. It was either “my father lives in another province”, “my Dad left us for drugs”, or “my dad is dead.” It was so hard hearing this, but I eagerly wanted to know more. They are either living with their single mom that is off and on with boyfriends, or living with a grandmother or aunt. A lot of them are living in the First Nations apartment buildings in the downtown area (off Commercial Street). Hearing them tell me all this really broke my heart. They have grown up in such a broken home and depressing lifestyle. The way they spoke and acted you could tell that they don’t know what love is. It is a foreign feeling and concept to them. The only time they hear about it is at this program. Byron and Diane are doing an excellent job of teaching them manners, and showing them the love through that of Christ Jesus. The kids really do not know how to behave because they have no discipline at home. The parents are either never around or they could care less about what their kids are doing. Those three days really made me mull over how recognizing Jesus’ presence is just as important as being his presence to other people. It was my duty to show those kids Christ’s love as best I could. God works in SUCH mysterious ways, and I only hope that I made just that much of difference in those kid’s lives for Jesus to keep working in. God has created that space in which something can happen that you hadn’t planed or counted on.

Something that was really cool is that camp Qwanoes is connected with the New Beginnings church and so a lot of the kids that we worked with have been to camp already and are continuing that this summer. God has such big plans for their lives; I just hope that they grasp that chance to become something bigger and better than what there parents were.
The last day we were in Vancouver (which was the Friday) we had another opportunity to lead another chapel for UGM which we did on our own. Now I must say, we had A LOT of time to brain storm idea’s throughout the week. We were actually set on doing a Drama to Music for the service, but we changed it last minute. So we had like not even an hour before we left to prepare a half hour sermon…awesome…. Deb and I were frantically scrambling for a topic. I happened to come across this devotion online that was to do with God using problem in our lives and how it affects us in the aspect of character building and enhancing your relationship with God, or depending on how you look at it, it can destroy you and tare you apart. The five topics were how God directs you, inspects you, corrects you, protects you and perfects you. These were very significant and brought forth a lot of questions. So we printed off the devotion and ran out the door. Still feeling really unprepared, we all needed to contribute somehow to this talk. Again, we thought that it would be cool to hear from the people and what there perspectives were on the specific topic, but we knew that we needed to be flexible so we made sure we came up with some of our own stories incase the guys didn’t feel like sharing. We asked them if they would like to share any personal experiences that they felt were appropriately suited for whichever issue they wanted. Of course, not really wanting to share and feel vulnerable, they say to us “We’re not really into sharing with the group ladies.” Feeling a little awkward about the comment, Deb totally ripped it up with giving them examples where God had significantly worked in her life which was so great.
Being up on stage you see the faces staring directly at you, glued to your face. Of course there are the occasional (well mainly the majority) drunk or perma-drunk guys in the crowd, and the half asleep guys, or the guys that are so out of it because they just shot up minutes before walking into the building. But the guys that are attentive and anxciously participating is so great and that is why we were there. We concluded the service with singing hymns. A lot of them don’t know the modern worship songs, but they love the hymns. There was a little extra time left at the end and so one of the guys in the crowd says “Sing more songs! We love it.” So we sang until all the men were out of the chapel, so that was pretty cool to hear.

As the men are eating their meals in the dining hall, we made our way to the exit door in the back of the building where we usually would greet them and thank them for coming. We saw a lot of the same guys that were there on the Monday, so they came up to us and were chatting a bit, cracking jokes and what not. After about 15 minutes passing by a guy named Kenny addressed us with striking eyes that were glued to us as he walked out of the building. “Ladies, I just want to let you know that I wanted to say something while you guys were talking. I could have talked for hours on your sermon.” He wanted to let us know how much of a “kick in this face” our sermon was today. I think God really shocked or surprised him. Just that day he had lost his job and was feelings really beaten up about it. He lives in the slummy Government buildings just down off Hastings. He is getting a second divorce and has not spoken or seen his kids in about 4 years. So hearing what he heard really opened his eyes and he started to wonder, “Is God telling me something through these problems of mine.” He went on to tell us what an encouragement it was to hear this and asked if he could have our devotion paper that we printed off. Man..i just remember thinking as I was up on stage, “wow, I hate this right now. Nothing is making sense, these people are going to boo us off stage or throw things at us. We are so not prepared enough for this.” I so desperately wanted that half hour to end for some reason. But God was so evident up there speaking through us to those people. And even if just one person got something out of it, that is all that matters. That is why we are here. As I was standing and listening to Kenny speak It made me think about discipline. Discipline means the effort to create space in which God can act. Discipline means to prevent everything in your life from being filled up. To create that space in which something can happen that you hadn’t planed or counted on. I need to make that choice to be actively present while working with these people, and giving God that open range to work freely through me. I want Jesus to invade my whole life…wow. God sent his Son to be among us, and we were given that command to plant seeds in the lives of non-believers. Being among the people means being in their midst, not outside. It means being with them. It means not looking away from their agony or humiliation, but beholding it and having the courage to be also wounded by their pain. I need to learn how to truly be among the people to whom I am sent, as Jesus was among us.

As we drove along the street of East Hasting, we saw the same people that we were speaking to only moments before, seeing them out back into the world going by and doing there daily routines. The street itself made me think of my Dad. He did not live on the streets himself, but he hungout with those people. They were his friends. He lived in very low-income housing (I think a hotel actually) and did odd jobs whenever he could. His life consisted of being absolutely consumed by alcohol and that is why he lived the way he did. Reflecting back on that and looking at the same people as we drove by brought me to tears. God was really placing these people on my heart. Not because I thought they were pathetic or felt sorry for them, but because I saw my Dad in those people. In there faces, and smiles and personalities. Recently, this year has been a process of healing and reconciling with my Dad. The relationship my Father and I had was one that consisted of phone calls and short letters every now and then. I didn’t have a Father in my life that was never fully present in body or in mind. As hard as it was thinking about this, I think God really gave me a blessing. Those specific experiences really helped me to connect with the “say yes” kids and the people on the streets. I think that is why I have such a heart for them. Like I said, I am so drawn to these people, and my father has a huge part of that. SO!...Vancouver was a beautiful healing process for me. Thank you Lord. God is sending me out of the little world I have constructed around me, where everything that reassures me is within easy reach and it is hard to get out of that “I am at the center of it all” mentality. Being sent from a comfortable, supportive environment-middle class- Christian family and church- into a street culture of violence, poverty, drugs, and prostitution is at first frightening and uncomfortable, but if it wasn’t where would the challenge be? “Being present the way Jesus was means that I have to abandon my own power. And seeing him in others teaches me the power of abandonment.”

I made great relationships with the youth kids. Toni, Corey and Leslie were three girls that really connected with us. The church is doing big things for them and I am so glad to see that they are being persistent in pursing after Christ’s own heart. They have big dreams and I pray that they continue to follow them.

After six days of being in Vancouver we headed back to camp Qwanoes for the night. We had the chance to repack and do laundry and whatever else that needed to be done. Early morning we drove three hours to a small fishing town called Ucluelet (just near Tofino). We worked with a guy named Aaron and his wife Julie for the ten days that we were there. We organized a Spring Break camp event for the First Nations kids on the reserve near Ucluelet (camp ran from mon-fri). There were about 8 kids on average that showed up on a daily basis. I must say, the kids were SO much different from the inner city Vancouver kids. They were well reserved, pleasant, polite and really respected us and listened well. As different as they were from the Van. kids, they as well came from really broken homes where abuse, violence, drugs and alcohol are involved. A lot of them lived with Grandparents and Aunts. There was one girl that I just completely fell in love with. Her name was Randi-Lee. She talked about anything and everything. She was just great and she loved learning about the bible talks that our leader Aaron put on for the group. We went through the Old Testament and concluded with Jesus dyeing for us. Every day she would come up and say “what are we going to be talking about today?” ha- so that was really encouraging see this little girl (around 8) so eager to know about the bible.

Deb and I were in charge of running the games there, and every 2-3 minutes it was like, “Okay kids NEW GAME.” Haha, they just had so much energy and would eventually get bored of the games so we had to switch up quite often. It rained almost every day while we were there so we played a lot of in door games, and then when it was nice out we played on the playground. I think what I really learned during that time was what the term “flexibility” meant. It became embedded into my brain. When we planned things, they usually wouldn’t turn out how we wanted it to, so being extremely open minded was a key factor basically throughout the entire trip.

The last four days of the mission’s trip was in Copper Island, which is a summer camp for First Nations kids. It is in a very secluded area via getting there by boat. SO we were there for four days taking on the tasks of some good hard labor ,working in the saw mill, getting our hands dirty in the kitchen, and working with electricians for the new chapel building that was being built. Our crew and 3 other guys met us there. There names were Bob, Rod, and Gerry. They were such awesome guys. Very easy going and loved to bug girls and tease them and prank them! Ohhh boy, haha. We had some good laughs and great fellowship with them. They are very Godly men that have so much integrity and love for the Lord. It was really encouraging to hear them share about their struggles and perspectives.

Me, being one that is not really a fan of sea food…we sure at A LOT of it. Pretty much everyday haha. It was cool fishing for the fish and trapping the crabs, and prawns, but not really that delightful eating it. However the crab was really good, just a little creepy seeing it alive earlier in the day and then ripping them apart to get the meat out of their legs…ew..
Being in such a secluded island and free of distractions, I had a lot of time to myself to think and reflect on my time in Vancouver and Ucluelet, and examine my relationship with God. I thought about the joy I had when I was with the kids and the homeless. I thought about how I know in the past I would run away from those situations. I know now that God is telling me that, that is where I need to be. So what does that mean for me in the future? Well working with Young Life is a great start (which I plan on doing). I am also looking into ways I can help the homeless community in Edmonton this year as well. I know one thing; there is no vacation from being a believer in Christ. I need to learn to wear Jesus like a coat, carry him consciously in my heart, and look for him everywhere.

I would never change this experience for the world. The challenges were worth while. The struggles were worth experiencing. I thank God so much for presenting me with this opportunity because I know now that I was supposed to be there.
AND OH MY WORD…this blog is gone on too long. Reading this over I feel like I have touched on everything that has been put on my heart to share. I would like to share a few names with you so you can be praying for them. One thing that Jim Badke told us on the Friday we got to share our stories with the group was “Now that you have started a relationship with these people, it is now your duty to pray for them. God have given you this responsibility to be persistant in prayer.” I am now upholding that commitment and it will be a challenge, but I never want to forget these people. I don’t want this experience to be something that slowly starts fading from my mind. So I hope that you can also make that commitment with me by praying for these people to come to know the Lord and long for it.

Kenny, Arlain, Raven, Tuconni, Dakota, Evan, Randi-lee, Waylan, Leslie, Toni, Nygel, Buddy, Maria, Madison, Jennifer-May, Ericka.

Please pray for the staff at New Beginnings church to keep loving the kids they have coming out to youth

Pray for the homeless, that God will become so evident in their lives that there will be no way to deny him.

Pray for Jenny and Carla for their amazing sacrifice they are giving in order to run their Inner Hope Safe house.

Pray for UGM that God will keep using them to speak into the lives of the less fortunate.

Thank you SO much for getting through this long blog until the end. I hope that his somehow encourages you in any way possible. Thank you so much for your prayers and all that you have done supporting me throughout this year.

Until next week, GOD BLESS YOU

Malayne

P.S; I was planning on doing a slide show to show you all of our amazing photo's but it is a very long process so hopefully next week i can have it uploaded.

Kaleo Ministry

This week has been an amazing week for learning. Our New Testament class was phenomenal. Our professor was so great. We call him Carl ☺ The things that I learned during the class were things that were so fresh to my mind. I realized that I barley new anything about the Gospels of Jesus. My bible is now full of notes. We read the entire book of Luke in class. There is SO much to take out of it. I am so thankful for what God has taught me. I feel like I have new eyes and a new heart. A really significant piece of Scripture that I took out of this class was from Luke 9: 23-27, “ l If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world and yet lose or forfeit his very self? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and his glory of the Father and of the holy angels. I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God.” This specific passage really speaks to me because my faith has been so surfaced level all my life. I have been sliding my way by. I need to be active in my faith, sharing it with everyone and anyone. Yeah that scares me half to death, but I do not want to be a Christian who is ashamed, and I do not want my Father to be ashamed of me. God is GOOD! This mission’s trip totally plays into what this passage is saying in the aspect of being active in your faith, not denying God but serving him, and surrendering yourself for the Lords Kingdom. Wow. What a statement!

During the week of class, our quick break concluded with this amazing song. It is a classic and I love it so much. It brings me shivers.

In Christ Alone:

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost it's grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
'Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

Tomorrow is the big day, and I am as ready as all I can be. I am ready to step out into the real world of danger, of worries, of weakness. I am ready to take on these new challenges that God has already put in front of me. I am ready to take these challenges and grasp them with the strength of Christ.

Now you may wonder, “Gee Malayne, what are you even talking about? Ya I know your going on a missions trip but what on earth are you going to be doing there?” I have realized that I have not at all explained in my previous blogs to you what I will be doing during these 18 days. So first off, you know I will be going to Vancouver for part of it, and then to Ucluelet and Copper island for the last half of it. During the time we will be in Vancouver, we are going to be staying with two lovely ladies by the name of Jenny and Carla. They both run an organization for first nations youth called “Inner Hope”. The youth that they deal with are from extremely broken homes, without parents, into a lot of alcohol, drugs and violence. They run something like a “safe house” at their own home. They are welcome to stay as long as they want. Their ministry is so amazing. It gives these kids a glimpse of what it is like to live a life without darkness. God is so evident in what Jenny and Carla are doing, and they could not do it without him.

While we are there we are going to be helping around the house with whatever is needed and we are going to help assist in building a youth room for the kids. Our journey also is going to be taking us to the nasty side of Vancouver, which is ‘East Hastings Street.” I think we are going to be working with the homeless (not too sure about everything). I believe it is said to be the most dangerous part of Vancouver. There is a lot of gangs around those parts, and we are told not to wear red at all during our time there because red is the color of some of the gangs and apparently it would create a lot of trouble. (wow) It is a whole other world out there and it is right outside my door step. I am so grateful for this opportunity to be involved in a mission that is within my area and not off somewhere else. Although international missions are just as important, I just feel really blessed to be apart of this. I have high expectations for what God is going to do in my life, and the lives of others.

The rest of our time on the trip will be in Ucluelet, which is a very isolated and secluded reserve. We have been given the responsibility of leading a VBS type program for the first nations children that range from 8-12 years old. The group will be small I am told. Only about 20 kids, which is awesome. It gives us a chance to get to know everyone. Deb and I are in charge of leading games and fun activities for the kids to do during the week. We have yet to brain storm on what those will be…we then move onto the isolated reserve of Copper Island. There is a summer camp that is run out there. We are participating in preparing the camp for this summer, fixing little things around camp and what not. There is also an after school program for kids to be tutored. We will help the kids with their studies. It is a really cool chance to engage with them and get to know them!

Okay, I am concluding this message. Thank you so much for your prayers. Please continue to pray for wisdom, strength, courage, passion, servant’s heart, openness, strong community within the team and the kids, and strong leadership. I am just so excited. I am excited for my heart to break for these people. I am excited to share my faith with people. I am excited for the challenge!

Until next time.

Kaleo Ministry

Hello my fellow blog readers. First of all, I would like to apologize for the lack of commitment I have been putting into my blog. I have been neglecting my time to writing not on purpose, but it was due to the week long reading break. Anyways…since I have been back, my week has been very productive. A lot of paper writing (which has officially put huge strain on my eyes), 24 hour week of prayer (only 3 days this time), Shannon and her fiancé John’s baptism, preparing for our missions trip, and enjoying my time in Victoria with the homeless
During the week, we were given 3 assignments due…today actually for our Gospels class. So far so good. I am really enjoying learning about the 4 magnificent books of , Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Our professor is certainly unique in his teachings, which is sort of refreshment. It beats power points and thousand word note taking. I look forward to tell you how the rest of the class goes this week…

Just last week we concluded our 24 hour 3 day of prayer. I had to miss church because my hour was at the time church was, but in all honesty I’m glad I stayed for that hour. I had a chance to sit on the relaxing IKEA recliner with my eyes closed. As I was in this state of mind, I opened my eyes and realized, there was silence. I couldn’t hear the boats outside or the birds chirping. I couldn’t here the heater buzzing or people talking in the halls. I was in complete silence with the Lord. I don’t think I have ever sat still and listened to the silence of Jesus without hearing the noise of the world. It was truly beautiful. A lot of my prayers were focused on our missions trip to Vancouver that is coming up next week. As you know there are three different trips taking place for the month of March (Deb, Kylie, Aaron and I are going to Vancouver). I was mainly praying for strength. Not relying on our own strength, but the strength of the Lord. I also prayed for courage and having a broken heart for the people we will be interacting with. I want to have a heart for them and not feel iced towards them. If you could pray for that, I would so appreciate that. Pray for wisdom, strength, courage, passion, servant’s heart, openness, strong community within the team and the kids, and strong leadership. I am truly excited about this. God is constantly working in these situations and I am so excited to see what he has in store.

Something that was really cool for me this week was Saturday. Saturday was SUCH a good day for seeing the power of Jesus. Shannon and her fiancé John got baptized down at the dock together. They are fully committing their lives for Jesus and has shown that through the significance of washing away their sins and renewing themselves in the name of the Father. It was such a powerful moment, especially seeing John speak about his testimony and how far he has come since giving his life to the Lord in September. After that baptism, a few of us went into Victoria to serve hot dogs and hot chocolate to the homeless. We spent about 2 hours there just hanging out with them and enjoying the conversations. Whenever I go out and do this sort of thing, it puts me in such an uncomfortable position, which I think is a good thing because I’m not supposed to be comfortable when I am doing the acts of the Lord. I have a passion for these people and I think it will lead to great things in the future
..Speaking of future, Kaleo is almost wrapping itself up! WOW!..so what does that mean for Malayne this year? I need prayer! A lot of decision making and not enough time to decide, but God will provide for me in my needs. Trusting in Him is so huge for me. It has been an incredible learning experience

Thank you again for your prayers, I hope to Blog once more before leaving for my trip, so it may be posted on the Saturday evening incase you are wondering because I leave Sunday morning!
God Bless

Kaleo Ministry

Good Morning all...well good afternoon for you!

This week has certainly been quite eventful. A lot of homework, youth group preparation, girl's night, and Valentine's Day were all significant events of a great week.

Our head Youth Leader, Stevie-G (as we like to call him), gave us six Warmlander's the opportunity to organize and run the Wednesday night grade 5-7 youth group. Considering Valentine's Day was a few short days away, we decided to bring the theme of "love" out of the closet. One thing that was mainly talked about was the Greek word "Agape" which means thee presents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, and thoughtful love. God gives us this love daily. With his love, a lot of other characteristics fall into place like grace and mercy, forgivness and compassion. We then brought up the topic of fear. What do you fear in your hearts? With that being said, we couldn't think of a better peice of scripture that suits the topic any better than 1 John 4:18 wich says, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." A lot of questions were brought up from the kids which was super encouraging for me to hear because they don't normally listen and usually goof around during group time..but yeah, it was really great.

On Thursday night, all of us girls drove over to the guest house and had a sleep over there. It was a night like no other. Typical girl games were played such as, "truth or dare", "two truth's and a lie," and a dance party. It was such a great night. Obviously we know each other a lot more so it was a really comfortable and relaxing time to just be girls and be silly. At the end of the night Kristy wanted us to write our names down on a peice of paper and in a circle, we passed our name around and each person had to put something that was encouraging on the paper. I really enjoyed it. Sometime as girls, we look at ourselves a lot differently than other people do. We critque and critisize our image and our personalities to the max. So when I got my peice of paper back, there were a lot of things that I didn't think I portrayed or even thought about, so it was really cool to see what other people thought about me and to have that affirmed.

So Valentin's Day...Congradulations to Shannon Allison and her new FIANCE Jonathon. They were engaged on the 14th. There was romance and love in the air all over Kaleo. Surprises, scavenger hunts, limo's and good meals. My roomates and I went out for a round of bowling and milkshakes with our "brother room" downstairs. It was really fun and glad I got to go do something.

So this week I come home! I am really excited to see everyone. The downside of this break is that it is a "reading break" meaning I have A LOT of homework to catch up and finish before I leave back to BC. I will mainly be nesstled away in my room with books surrounding every corner, but I'm sure I will find some time to hangout with everyone and relax, share some good stories and some good laughs.

Thanks for reading my BLOG and I will return next week. God Bless you and your week.

SO TONIGHT I AM WRITING IN CAP LOCKS!!..HMM..I ALMOST DON'T KNOW HOW TO START THIS BLOG. HMM..I GUESS THIS WEEK HAS BEEN OKAY...YA..JUST OKAY. WELL FIRST OF ALL I MUST SAY THAT OUR OLD TESTATMENT CLASS WAS AMAZING AND I CERTAINLY LEARNED A LOT FROM IT. OUT TEACHER DON TAYLOR WAS SO GREAT AND REALLY HAD A PASSION FOR GOD AND IT SHOWED. IT WAS INTERESTING TO LEARN HOW MUCH THE OLD TESTAMENT REFLECTS ONTO THE NEW TESTAMENT. ON OUR EXAM WE HAD TO LEARN ALL THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE INORDER AND THE CORRECT SPELLING, SO I DOWNLOADED THE "OLD TESTAMENT HOP" WHICH IS A KIDS PRAISE CD. IT WAS SO FUNNY TRYING TO REMEMBER THIS SONG THAT HAD SUCH A BAD TUNE TO IT, BUT I MUST SAY THAT IT CERTAINLY HELPED. BUT YEAH...IN ALL SERIOUSNESS I TRULY ENJOYED THAT CLASS AND I AM REALLY INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT IT.

THIS WEEK IS SORT OF A "BI-WEEK" I GUESS YOU COULD SAY. WE ARE MAINLY JUST DOING HOMEWORK AND...YA I GUESS MORE HOMEOWORK. OH BUT WE DO HAVE A GIRLS NIGHT ON THURSDAY, SO IM SURE THAT WILL BE COOL. THEY ALWAYS ARE.

ANYWAYS, I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY. SO I THINK IM GOING TO END IT.

Kaleo Ministry

Last week the crew and I headed over to the superb mainland, that being Vancouver. We enjoyed three days of the downtown life which included food courts, random mall walking in ridiculously overpriced stores, Starbucks, and missions fest. Of course missions fest was the whole reason why we were there in the first place. I had never been to the Vancouver one, and my oh my, it is HUGE (compared to Edmonton's). Missional booths were of course the main attraction of the event. There were hundreds of them. Whether it was summers camps, colleges and universities, or local and international organizations, they were all trying to somehow get your attention. I had the pleasant opportunity of dropping by the YWAM booth. The "booth runner" or whatever you would like to call him, told me some interesting facts about the Australia and New Zealand 6 month back packing DTS programs. They seem very intriguing and I have been looking into it for a while. There were a few sessions that I went to during the day that really brought some new things to my attention. One of the sessions was organized by Ratanak Foundations. There main focus at the moment is specifically on Cambodia and the brutal circumstances that are revealed. The presenter spoke about the sex trade that goes on there with kids young as 8 years old. The man that spoke had been a private investigator for the Canadian Police Department. He had gone on a vacation to Cambodia with his family, heard about what was going on there and then decided to devote his life to bring justice to the unjust. The organization is wonderful and is bringing great hope to their nation. They have put a lot of bad people in jail and created a safe placed such as churches and youth centers for the people of Cambodia. My heart goes out to these people. I don't know what much to do about the situation. The first thing that came to mind was " I just want to go there and help stop everything." Of course that is something that could be very possible. I am just not sure where God is directing my future at this point of time, but he certainly is putting missions on my heart whether it be YWAM or another organization.

Today was our first class of "Old Testament Literature." It was so interesting to hear the historical stories of the Bible. A lot of my responses to the readings were mainly "What the heck?, I didn't know that..circumcsion? GROSS." But i certainly learned a lot of the bible stories that i SHOULD have already known when I was 8 while "listening" in Sunday school.
I am looking forward to what the class has in store for the rest of the week. I expect to come out of this class with a lot more understanding of who God is and how he used his people.

A little piece of scripture that i have been thinking about this week: Psalms 145: 8- 9The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in his steadfast love. The Lord is good to all and his mercy is over all that he has made.

May your week be filled with the Lords love and grace.

Kaleo Ministry

This week has been spiritually challenging and exhausting, but at the same time it was refreshing and it put me in a state of vulnerability towards God. God gave me the opportunity to asses my relationship with him and it threw me out of my comfort zone inorder to become intentional with him. Now y0u may wonder "where did this inspirational thought come from?" A lot of it mainly had to do with our 24 hour, 4 day week of prayer. I had the privilege to pray with a couple girls in room 204 (where the prayer room is). During that time it was a chance to lift up what we had on our hearts in amazing conversations and blessed prayer. It brought me a lot of new insigts and encouragment. I felt like I could express myself in an authentic way. I had a lot on my mind, and I got to release my thoughts and perspectives. It was a freeing experience. It was an amazing place to be weak and vulnerable. "Your flesh is weak, but your spirit is strong"- Jim Badke

So last Saturday, Colleen (a lady that we met at church) invited a few of us girls to come with her to Victoria with a trunk full of sleeping bags, cloths, hats, mits, socks, hot chocoloate and cookies and headed out to the downtown area to hand everything out to the homeless. Colleen is an amazing women with a strong passionate heart for God as well as the homeless. During the 2 hours that we were there, a lot of them came and went, not really looking to talk. A few stayed around and we  had the chance to engage in really cool conversations. The thing with the guys on the street is they don't usually give out their real names. They introduce themselves with their given "street names." A guy named "Poet" came up to us and asked us about our lives and what we do. He concluded his conversation with a small poem on the topic of "Crack-cocain."...hmm...I thought to myself "Is this guy for real?" I stared at him until he was finished. His face had dried sores all over and you could tell he was on some sort of drug, but the words that came out of his mouth were so heart aching, real, raw and crack is what drives this man's life. Surprisingly I was not the one encouraging him to have a better life, he was the was influencing me to have a better life and to look to God for wisdom. Another man we were talking to was named "G". He has been on the streets for quite a few years floating around the area. We offered him a bible of the New Testament to take a look at. He was very interested in what we were doing and why we were doing it. Gerri (a guy from our church that also came along) closed our conversation in prayer. I was truly touched by his act of love. The relationships that were created that night was something I will remember forever. We are looking to go and do this again next month, so hopefully we can interact with those same people. I think God is showing me what my passions are and how much I have a heart for these people. G now would like to come out to our home church and see what we are all about, so we are picking him up next week from Duncan!! Man, God is good. I never even imagined that we would get such an impacting response. Something so little can turn into something life changing.

This thursday we are heading out to Vancouver for missions fest. The Vancouver team will be staying with people that run the organization called "Inner Hope Missions." It is sort of a test run to check us out and what our personalities are like. I am really excited to meet them and hopefully they will like us! We are going to be attending the evening sessions and taking a tour of the booths that will be set up. It will be a really neat opportunity to take a look at all of the different mission organizations. I am currently looking into a Y-WAM mission for next January in Australia. I plan on getting a lot more information on it, so it will be really cool.

I will wrap this up, sorry for such a descriptive BLOG. God Bless everyone and thank you for your prayers.

Until Next week

Kaleo Min.

Wow. God has been good.

Reflecting back on this past semester, I have come to realize and truly appreciate the amazing moments that I have seen God prepare and reveal to me. I thank him everyday for the good times and the bad, for the moments of tears and the moments of laughter.

I must say, getting back into the groove of Blogging once a week is going to be a challenge for me, especially due to the fact that my right wrist is currently broken! BUT...here goes nothing

This past week we gathered up our things, put on some snow gear and headed out to Mount Washington Ski Resort where we spent five beautiful warms days of relaxing in our chalet, boarding the slopes, eating great food, and having awesome conversations as a group. So if you all would like to hear how my wrist detached itself, I would love to tell you. It was the morning of the first day not to mention the first run of the day. I had just finished coming down the mountain and was meters away from the chair lift. I began to turn my board into the "snow plow" position, and suddenly my toe edge grabbed me and BAM, fell directly on my right wrist. The pain shocked me! I had gone into the emergency that evening to be told that I will be casted for 6 weeks! OH and the following day, my roomate Jayme busted her right wrist too!! Can you believe that?..well..that sure covered the rest of my week with a drenched wet blanket, or so i thought. The week was amazing even though I did not get to snowboard. Sleeping in was a bonus and playing out in the snow was the cherry on my...cake? Aside from those events..wow..chapel. What can I say about that? Jim gave us the opportunity to speak out about our Kaleo names that we were previously given on the SALTS trip. (mine was "Sure") The word "sure" has been on my mind for quite sometime now. Since this last semester, God has transformed my heart from being "unsure" to "FOR sure". Of course that doesn't mean i have things figured out. But it certainly contributes to my journy with God. Hebrews 11:1 says, "Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you cannot see." I have a better understanding of what it means to trust in Him. I have yet to share my testimony with the group, and I have realized why i have been holding back from that. My story is something that doesn't quite make sense in my eyes. I am slowly beginning to acknowledge the hurts and needs that I have not dealt with in a healthy matter. Anyways, chapel was amazing and it brought up questions and concerns that I need to figure out, so I thank God for that.

This week is basically preperation for a class we are having this tuesday. Our Prof is Lech Bekesza. He is a Pastor at Cobble Hill Church. I am expecting great things out of this class. Although I hear he is a little intimidating and a bit authoritative and not to mention opinionated, but I think that it will be a great experience to hear what he has to say about Theology. Prep work is what i have been consumed with this week and am ready for a little down time. One of the assignments that we have to do is to write a Psalm about a passed experience where you have aknowleged  your sin and how God has been shown in that situation where he has changed you.

I fail exceptionally at my attempts of reaching perfection
I have reached a new high of imperfection and weakness
Sin consumes my life daily
I dwell in what is bad, never in what is good
Never what you have given, but always what is missing
Selfishness overcomes me
Nothing is ever enough
Falling, falling, falling...

You have given me new eyes to see
A glimpse of perfection
Your selflessness has altered my outlook
You are a God of grace and love
You provide our needs and wants with what we do not deserve
You have given me a new sense of peace and strength
You have given me a desire to give rather than to receive

I want to strive to become your image
The image of perfection
The image that captures one's heart and free's the soul
I want what you want, not what the world tells me to want
My selfishness is being transformed into sacrifice

Thank you for this freeing experience, Oh Lord
You are who you are because of your selflessness
I find great fervor and zeal in knowing who you are
You are captivating and everlasting
Thank you for your grace and beauty

It is a great thing that God has shown me. Until next week

Cheers,

Malayne

The Kaleo Ministry Sum-up

On the road again...
Wow, this year is hard to sum up into one blog posting. I have had such an amazing experience here. The community is nothing that i have experienced before, the academics are such a blessing, my roomates are beautiful people and they could not be better, all the girls are wonderful, and i love the boys like brothers. God has opened my eyes to a bigger picture. He has taught me about who I really am, about trusting in him and in others, patients, love and humility. I see myself doing big things along side with God. I am glad that the christmas break came at the time that it has because I am ready to come home and am anticipating seeing my family and friends. I am excited about the conversation i have yet to have with them, the challenges that i have yet to struggle with, and the beautiful moments where i can sit and be still with Christ. With this amazing 3 months of being on a high, there has been some lows as well. I find myself constantly procrastinating in my studies, time with God, decision makings and with people. I know that Christ is trying to confront me and he has been convicting me of these things, but i have not truly acknowledged that and taken the time to change it. It is something that i need to change in my life and am feeling prepared to do so.

No snow: ...I've gotta say...the snow around here is pretty amazing, mainly because there isn't any. It is deffinitly a different climate here. But i do have to say that i miss the good old white christmas and am exicted to come back.

Thank you all so much for supporting me througout this time here. This will be my last BLOG entry until the new year, but of course that doesn't mean your prayers have to stop haha. Keep'er goin.

See you all very soon

God Bless

Church Min Class: So we are officially done fall semester classes, and wow..they were amazing. I especially enjoyed this one. Prof. David Lee taught us so much about church history, modern day church and how churches have been twisted in our day. He really oppened my eyes to how the church has been tanted from past traditions and how a church should be properly run as disciples after God's kingdom. It was interesting to get the perspective of a pastor and how he views church in general. I never realized how big of a comittment it was. I really loved the class and i would love to go further in that class.

Chill week ahead: The next week and a half is pretty much for cathing up, being lazy and having fun. We are going on a "christmas tree hunt", watching christmas movies, christmas banquet, having a talent show and going snowboarding. WOOT!!

See you all very soon and Merry Christmas!!

God Bless

24/7 Week of Prayer: God has done some amazing things in such a short week. He has shown me the power of prayer and how significant it is in order to grow stronger, to be honest and real with people and God; having a strong prayer community; amazing conversations; and surrendering yourself. I was really challenged with God. I felt that i had passion in my prayers rather then just praying for the sake of talking. I meant what I said when I would pray. I also felt really challenging when praying with others. It was peacful and refreshing.

Extreme Makeover- Church Addition: Warmland Community Church just bought the old hardware building in Crofton to build new offices for the board. A couple of us walked over to help. It was really cool to see the majority of the church helping eachother out and committing to something that is striving towards the betterment of the church. God is doing wonderful things in that church. I love watching it grow.

This week has tought me a lot about perseverance, struggles, joy, peace, surrendering, confidence, contentment, community and love. I am so thankful for what the Lord is doing in my life. I feel like a new person. I am just so excited to come home and talk with you and tell you about my new life.

This week we are starting our last class of the semester. Church Ministry. It is really cool already. The class has really asked some challenging questions about the church, questioning certain motives of certain churches and so on. This will be a good class.

Kaleo Ministry

Last week was a good week. We had a girls night where we watched Pride and Prejudice and ate chocolate fondue, turned in our Hermeneutics paper and did a weeked of Sr. High retreat.

THIS week we started our first 24 hour week of prayer. We set up room 204 with pictures of every Kaleo student and markers and paper to write or draw with. Each student/intern goes for one hour a day (we have a schdule set up). It's purpose is to have a quiet sanctuary with God and give him your thoughts and prayers. It is an honest place to go to. the word "honesty" has been brough up a lot recently here. We want people to not only share their testamonies with us, but also to engage honest and deepers conversations throughout the year. I want to get to know people on more than just a surface level, so i think that this is going to be a very powering week that will stay in my memories forever.

If you can just pray for clarity and peace while people are in 204. That it can be a place of open mindedness, repentance, honesty, and love for God and eachother. A lot of people here struggle with putting on a Godly outward appearance and that is not where it counts. God knows our hearts and what are true motives are. So i ask if you can pray for that change in mind.

Thank you so much. You are in my thoughts daily. Love all around!! Until next time...

CAVING: I forgot to mention this in my last BLOG!The day after we had we walked the streets of Victoria handing out socks to the homeless, we went caving just near Nanamio! It was AMAZING! Up and down, in and out, across and down etc. We went through very tight spaces..one was so tight we called it 'The Birthing Hole'....ya........good times! Anyways...It was sooo dark in there. We had to wear our headlamps and crawl accross the wet ground. On our way out there was a roof full of spiders....i almost passed out i was so scared haha. But i PERSEVERED THROUGH AND MADE IT OUT ALIVE!!!!

Jr High Retreat: I worked another full weekend in the kitchen for the Jr. High retreat. Chopping, slicing, stirring, and frying eggs are now my specialties. :) Im pretty much a professional cook. I deffintly do not give the kitchen staff enough credit when it comes to cooking for 150 kids. They are amazing people and they are serving the Lord in such an awesome way.
=Wating for Jenna in the car

READING BREAK!: I love reading break!!...a bunch of people left for the week so there is only about 9 of us here. We all went out to BPs (including camp staff) last night for a wonderful dinner. Good stories and good laughs. We mainly have been watching movies and eating. (Media fast? i think not!)...When your on reading break, the main focus should be catching up on your studies. I have failed to do that so far. But i have learned my lesson not to leave really important assignments to the last minute. I will get on that tomorrow haha....

MISSION DECISION!!: I have failed to mention to my fellow readers what missions trip I have chosen for next year! I have decided to join the Vancouver inner city team!! This trip contains of 12 days, 5 people, Godly hearts and vulnerbility. The Victoria trip kind of gave me a taste of what we will be doing in Vancouver. I am very excited. I just want to go and do. (be his hands and feet). God has really been putting excitment on my heart. I am excited to learn, to live, to do, to love and to do so much more!

Thank you for everyone's prayers. You all are in my thoughts as well. Keep safe, keep healthy and have a great week. Talk to you soon.

Kaleo Ministry

HERMENEUTICS!...We just ended our second class of the year this week. It was a very interesting class. It is all about iterpreting the bible, picking apart what certain scriptures mean. Basically reading it for all it is worth. The class was very dry but at the same time very challenging and meaningful. It gave me a greater perspective of the bible and how to truly read it and apply it.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN?...Warlmand Community Church hosted a halloween party for the local kids. It was a really cool opportunity to hangout with the kids of our youth group to get to know them a little more. At the end of the night a few of us girls went the store and bought a big bag of candy and handed out to kids that were still trick or treating. It was really fun. Apparently there is a lot of illegal fire works that go on during the night, so we were kind of patrolling the town...catching the little hoolagins..

The Streets of Vic....Half of the Kaleo group had been given the opportunity to travel to Victoria for the day with a few back packs full of socks, jackets, sleeping bags and food to give to the people living on the streets. It was such a cool chance to talk to these people and really engage them with great conversation about the Lord. We were split up into groups of three or four and each took a different route around the downtown area. It took us a while to actually find someone that was 'approachable' as in not asking for money or playing instruments. We eventually sat down with a guy and his girl friend in the park. His name was wayne or "peak East" as he called himself..(whatever that means) The first thing he said to us was, "Are you guys apart of some organization?..You look very unified"...

Wayne talked about his travels around the world, how he was in a rock band for most of his days, and what life was like on the streets. He talked so much that we barly got a word in haha. but it was great to hear what he thinks of the world from his point of view. We eventually gave him some food and parted ways..

This experience gave me a whole new outlook on poverty. These people are not just street people. They ARE people and they have stories of their own. They want to be heard by anyone that will listen. God showed me comfort from these people. I was too much of an ignorant person to the situation at hand before. I had been afraid to even look at a street person yet alone talk to one. But i walk away from this experience smiling and thanking God for everyhthing he has blessed me with.

Kaleo Ministry

PAPERS, PAPERS...AND MORE PAPERS!!
This picture here can pretty much sum up my week. My days consisted of skipping meals, taking naps, drinking A LOT of coffee, staying up until three in morning, and reading until your brain is fried... pretty much sums of the life of a college student. Luckly I somehow managed to complete everything in time (Literally with one minute to spare). The book we had to read for our next class was on "How to Read the Bible for All its Worth". It is all about translating and interpreting the bible to get as much out of it as you can rather then skimming over the words and coming out empty handed. It was a very dry and challenging book and i really did not take much interest in it..but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Our Hermeneutics class starts tomorrow. Merrill Dyck is our prof. Apparently he is a very harsh marker...oh boy!...

IT'S MISSION TIME!: Last week Jim gave us a panthlet of the four different types of mission trips that we can choose from. They are all very different and range from 3200 to 0 dollars. The four options are India (costing the most), Colombia, New York, and inner city Vancouver. We have until this friday to give him our decision. I am really struggeling with my decision. I know that one thing that has been pressed on my heart is striving for a genuine and authentic faith in Christ. The India trip is all about prayer. It consists of 10-12 days of back packing through various villages and putting yourself out there and really seeing and feeling the power of prayer. I know that is one thing I sometimes take for granted. I want this to be an experience where i see new perspectives and know that God is the same here as he is there. So i think that India will really help that authenticity grow. I was also thinking of Vancouver. It is a completley different experience than India. I was talking to a previous Kaleo student and she said it was like "culture shock". You have no idea how big the poverty is in Vancouver unless you see it for yourself. She was telling me about all the experience she had helping out with broken families. It was really touching...but again..im just not sure where the calling is right now. If you could please pray for clarity and guidence toward these trips. :)

Thanks for all the prayers. I really needed that extra boost to finish my assignments. That was only the PRE COURSE stuff...imagine what the things we will be getting DURING clas...ohhhh boy!

Until next week, God Bless

Kaleo Ministry

Hello all. Welcome to another week of Malayne's Kaleo expereience! The trees are changing colors, the water is frigid and unfriendly, the air is cold, but life is still beautiful.

WOMEN'S RETREAT:
I had a special and privileged opportunity to take part in serving in a women's weekend retreat that took place at Qwanoes this weekend. There was over 130 women here. My job was to help in the kitchen and take part in mug up in the evenings. On saturday the women had the guest house to themselves for a "high tea" event. There were pedicures, manicures, tea, delectable foods, makeovers and great conversations that went on. I helped with organizing the manicure station and taking orders for the ladies as they sat and enjoyed eachothers company. The ladies really appreciated the Kaleo students contribtuing to their weekend. They really recognized the value of our time and loved what we were doing in Kaleo.

GIRLS NIGHT!:
Our intern Jen and Kaleo life Leader Kristie, organized a Girls Night out last week. It was a chance for us girls to really be real with one another and reach out to eachother. I really enjoyed it. A lot of girls opened up their thoughts and feelings to the group. It was very powering. We went out for indian food, had some Dairy Queen and then stayed the night in Nanaimo right on the beach at a camp Qwanos boards house. We had an amazing breakfast and walked on the beach in the early morning, where we then went to the SHOPPING MALL and blew money that we didn't have. But hey...it was a bonding experience. It needed to happen.

YOUTH GROUP:
Youth went really well on wednesday. The girls in my group listened to me and respected what i had to say, mainly because i told them I would give them candy at the next youth group haha. During our discussion, one of the girls had asked me a question. "If God can do anything, why can't he get rid of Satan?" It was a question that was so simple yet so challenging at the same time. I thought about it and turly could not give her a reasonable answer. I told her i would research it and tell her the following week. God tells us that we are to be ready for anything and everything at any given time. That one girls simple question kind of showed me how im not intirly ready. I am slowly in the proceses of learning and getting out there and teaching.

Well I think that is everything that happend this week. Thanks for reading everyone. Oh and if you guys can especially pray for my toe. I sliced it open pretty bad last night...we wont go into how i did it..haha. It is looking good, but it is really throbbing and we are going caving on thursday so i hope i will be able to go!
God Bless

Kaleo Ministry

How is everyone's thanksgving?? Mine is going well. There are only a few of us students that stayed at camp for the weekend. Everyone else had family or friends to be with. It is nice though, we went into Victoria and did some shopping and had an AMAZING meal. (it's kinda nice to taste something rather than camp food if you know what I mean)

So we just got back from our TOFINO SURF TRIP!..boy was that an experience in it's self. I highly recommend you to do it if you get the chance. Such an amazing time. We surfed for two days and camped right on the beach. It was a great time. perfect weather for the whole 3 days. During one of our evening fires, Lelia (one of the Kaleo students) shared her testimony. It was really interesting to hear Lelia explain her story and how she has grown from the hardships in her life. I really appreciated everything she had to say. She is the type of girl that is always smiling no matter what. I love it. She brings great joy to the group. I have yet to share my testimony. I'm pretty excited to do that. I had a chance to do it on the Kayaking trip in the summer so i feel really prepared and opened to have everyone listen. So asides from surfing, we did a little shopping and before we arrived in Tofino we stopped at a Govt Voting station and I got officially vote for the first time!! It was pretty cool (Go conservatives!)

We don't have any classes this week, which is kinda nice. It's a chance for us to finish up our papers that we have been putting off for the last week or so. This is the first Thanksgiving without the fam jam. Hope you guys are having fun without me!!! :P

Today (Sunday), our church (Warmland community Church) had the service on a farm!! Yahoo for farm church. It was really cool. There was blue grass music, traditional outfits warn, pie eating contests, tug-a-wars, potato sack races, and hey bail rides. It was really fun. Shannon totally owned all at the pie eating contest. She is my hero

And that about wraps up my week. So I hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving and I will be updating you more next week on camp ministry, church ministry and other events that are taking place. Take care everyone. Love you all

God Bless
