On the road again...

Wow, this year is hard to sum up into one blog posting. I have had such an amazing experience here. The community is nothing that i have experienced before, the academics are such a blessing, my roomates are beautiful people and they could not be better, all the girls are wonderful, and i love the boys like brothers. God has opened my eyes to a bigger picture. He has taught me about who I really am, about trusting in him and in others, patients, love and humility. I see myself doing big things along side with God. I am glad that the christmas break came at the time that it has because I am ready to come home and am anticipating seeing my family and friends. I am excited about the conversation i have yet to have with them, the challenges that i have yet to struggle with, and the beautiful moments where i can sit and be still with Christ. With this amazing 3 months of being on a high, there has been some lows as well. I find myself constantly procrastinating in my studies, time with God, decision makings and with people. I know that Christ is trying to confront me and he has been convicting me of these things, but i have not truly acknowledged that and taken the time to change it. It is something that i need to change in my life and am feeling prepared to do so.

No snow: ...I've gotta say...the snow around here is pretty amazing, mainly because there isn't any. It is deffinitly a different climate here. But i do have to say that i miss the good old white christmas and am exicted to come back.

Thank you all so much for supporting me througout this time here. This will be my last BLOG entry until the new year, but of course that doesn't mean your prayers have to stop haha. Keep'er goin.

24/7 Week of Prayer: God has done some amazing things in such a short week. He has shown me the power of prayer and how significant it is in order to grow stronger, to be honest and real with people and God; having a strong prayer community; amazing conversations; and surrendering yourself. I was really challenged with God. I felt that i had passion in my prayers rather then just praying for the sake of talking. I meant what I said when I would pray. I also felt really challenging when praying with others. It was peacful and refreshing.

Extreme Makeover- Church Addition: Warmland Community Church just bought the old hardware building in Crofton to build new offices for the board. A couple of us walked over to help. It was really cool to see the majority of the church helping eachother out and committing to something that is striving towards the betterment of the church. God is doing wonderful things in that church. I love watching it grow.

This week has tought me a lot about perseverance, struggles, joy, peace, surrendering, confidence, contentment, community and love. I am so thankful for what the Lord is doing in my life. I feel like a new person. I am just so excited to come home and talk with you and tell you about my new life.

This week we are starting our last class of the semester. Church Ministry. It is really cool already. The class has really asked some challenging questions about the church, questioning certain motives of certain churches and so on. This will be a good class.

Last week was a good week. We had a girls night where we watched Pride and Prejudice and ate chocolate fondue, turned in our Hermeneutics paper and did a weeked of Sr. High retreat.

THIS week we started our first 24 hour week of prayer. We set up room 204 with pictures of every Kaleo student and markers and paper to write or draw with. Each student/intern goes for one hour a day (we have a schdule set up). It's purpose is to have a quiet sanctuary with God and give him your thoughts and prayers. It is an honest place to go to. the word "honesty" has been brough up a lot recently here. We want people to not only share their testamonies with us, but also to engage honest and deepers conversations throughout the year. I want to get to know people on more than just a surface level, so i think that this is going to be a very powering week that will stay in my memories forever.

If you can just pray for clarity and peace while people are in 204. That it can be a place of open mindedness, repentance, honesty, and love for God and eachother. A lot of people here struggle with putting on a Godly outward appearance and that is not where it counts. God knows our hearts and what are true motives are. So i ask if you can pray for that change in mind.

CAVING: I forgot to mention this in my last BLOG!The day after we had we walked the streets of Victoria handing out socks to the homeless, we went caving just near Nanamio! It was AMAZING! Up and down, in and out, across and down etc. We went through very tight spaces..one was so tight we called it 'The Birthing Hole'....ya........good times! Anyways...It was sooo dark in there. We had to wear our headlamps and crawl accross the wet ground. On our way out there was a roof full of spiders....i almost passed out i was so scared haha. But i PERSEVERED THROUGH AND MADE IT OUT ALIVE!!!!

Jr High Retreat: I worked another full weekend in the kitchen for the Jr. High retreat. Chopping, slicing, stirring, and frying eggs are now my specialties. :) Im pretty much a professional cook. I deffintly do not give the kitchen staff enough credit when it comes to cooking for 150 kids. They are amazing people and they are serving the Lord in such an awesome way.

READING BREAK!: I love reading break!!...a bunch of people left for the week so there is only about 9 of us here. We all went out to BPs (including camp staff) last night for a wonderful dinner. Good stories and good laughs. We mainly have been watching movies and eating. (Media fast? i think not!)...When your on reading break, the main focus should be catching up on your studies. I have failed to do that so far. But i have learned my lesson not to leave really important assignments to the last minute. I will get on that tomorrow haha....

MISSION DECISION!!: I have failed to mention to my fellow readers what missions trip I have chosen for next year! I have decided to join the Vancouver inner city team!! This trip contains of 12 days, 5 people, Godly hearts and vulnerbility. The Victoria trip kind of gave me a taste of what we will be doing in Vancouver. I am very excited. I just want to go and do. (be his hands and feet). God has really been putting excitment on my heart. I am excited to learn, to live, to do, to love and to do so much more!

HERMENEUTICS!...We just ended our second class of the year this week. It was a very interesting class. It is all about iterpreting the bible, picking apart what certain scriptures mean. Basically reading it for all it is worth. The class was very dry but at the same time very challenging and meaningful. It gave me a greater perspective of the bible and how to truly read it and apply it.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN?...Warlmand Community Church hosted a halloween party for the local kids. It was a really cool opportunity to hangout with the kids of our youth group to get to know them a little more. At the end of the night a few of us girls went the store and bought a big bag of candy and handed out to kids that were still trick or treating. It was really fun. Apparently there is a lot of illegal fire works that go on during the night, so we were kind of patrolling the town...catching the little hoolagins..

The Streets of Vic....Half of the Kaleo group had been given the opportunity to travel to Victoria for the day with a few back packs full of socks, jackets, sleeping bags and food to give to the people living on the streets. It was such a cool chance to talk to these people and really engage them with great conversation about the Lord. We were split up into groups of three or four and each took a different route around the downtown area. It took us a while to actually find someone that was 'approachable' as in not asking for money or playing instruments. We eventually sat down with a guy and his girl friend in the park. His name was wayne or "peak East" as he called himself..(whatever that means) The first thing he said to us was, "Are you guys apart of some organization?..You look very unified"...

Wayne talked about his travels around the world, how he was in a rock band for most of his days, and what life was like on the streets. He talked so much that we barly got a word in haha. but it was great to hear what he thinks of the world from his point of view. We eventually gave him some food and parted ways..

This experience gave me a whole new outlook on poverty. These people are not just street people. They ARE people and they have stories of their own. They want to be heard by anyone that will listen. God showed me comfort from these people. I was too much of an ignorant person to the situation at hand before. I had been afraid to even look at a street person yet alone talk to one. But i walk away from this experience smiling and thanking God for everyhthing he has blessed me with.

PAPERS, PAPERS...AND MORE PAPERS!!

This picture here can pretty much sum up my week. My days consisted of skipping meals, taking naps, drinking A LOT of coffee, staying up until three in morning, and reading until your brain is fried... pretty much sums of the life of a college student. Luckly I somehow managed to complete everything in time (Literally with one minute to spare). The book we had to read for our next class was on "How to Read the Bible for All its Worth". It is all about translating and interpreting the bible to get as much out of it as you can rather then skimming over the words and coming out empty handed. It was a very dry and challenging book and i really did not take much interest in it..but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Our Hermeneutics class starts tomorrow. Merrill Dyck is our prof. Apparently he is a very harsh marker...oh boy!...

IT'S MISSION TIME!: Last week Jim gave us a panthlet of the four different types of mission trips that we can choose from. They are all very different and range from 3200 to 0 dollars. The four options are India (costing the most), Colombia, New York, and inner city Vancouver. We have until this friday to give him our decision. I am really struggeling with my decision. I know that one thing that has been pressed on my heart is striving for a genuine and authentic faith in Christ. The India trip is all about prayer. It consists of 10-12 days of back packing through various villages and putting yourself out there and really seeing and feeling the power of prayer. I know that is one thing I sometimes take for granted. I want this to be an experience where i see new perspectives and know that God is the same here as he is there. So i think that India will really help that authenticity grow. I was also thinking of Vancouver. It is a completley different experience than India. I was talking to a previous Kaleo student and she said it was like "culture shock". You have no idea how big the poverty is in Vancouver unless you see it for yourself. She was telling me about all the experience she had helping out with broken families. It was really touching...but again..im just not sure where the calling is right now. If you could please pray for clarity and guidence toward these trips. :)

Thanks for all the prayers. I really needed that extra boost to finish my assignments. That was only the PRE COURSE stuff...imagine what the things we will be getting DURING clas...ohhhh boy!

Hello all. Welcome to another week of Malayne's Kaleo expereience! The trees are changing colors, the water is frigid and unfriendly, the air is cold, but life is still beautiful.

WOMEN'S RETREAT:

I had a special and privileged opportunity to take part in serving in a women's weekend retreat that took place at Qwanoes this weekend. There was over 130 women here. My job was to help in the kitchen and take part in mug up in the evenings. On saturday the women had the guest house to themselves for a "high tea" event. There were pedicures, manicures, tea, delectable foods, makeovers and great conversations that went on. I helped with organizing the manicure station and taking orders for the ladies as they sat and enjoyed eachothers company. The ladies really appreciated the Kaleo students contribtuing to their weekend. They really recognized the value of our time and loved what we were doing in Kaleo.

GIRLS NIGHT!:

Our intern Jen and Kaleo life Leader Kristie, organized a Girls Night out last week. It was a chance for us girls to really be real with one another and reach out to eachother. I really enjoyed it. A lot of girls opened up their thoughts and feelings to the group. It was very powering. We went out for indian food, had some Dairy Queen and then stayed the night in Nanaimo right on the beach at a camp Qwanos boards house. We had an amazing breakfast and walked on the beach in the early morning, where we then went to the SHOPPING MALL and blew money that we didn't have. But hey...it was a bonding experience. It needed to happen.

YOUTH GROUP:

Youth went really well on wednesday. The girls in my group listened to me and respected what i had to say, mainly because i told them I would give them candy at the next youth group haha. During our discussion, one of the girls had asked me a question. "If God can do anything, why can't he get rid of Satan?" It was a question that was so simple yet so challenging at the same time. I thought about it and turly could not give her a reasonable answer. I told her i would research it and tell her the following week. God tells us that we are to be ready for anything and everything at any given time. That one girls simple question kind of showed me how im not intirly ready. I am slowly in the proceses of learning and getting out there and teaching.

Well I think that is everything that happend this week. Thanks for reading everyone. Oh and if you guys can especially pray for my toe. I sliced it open pretty bad last night...we wont go into how i did it..haha. It is looking good, but it is really throbbing and we are going caving on thursday so i hope i will be able to go!

How is everyone's thanksgving?? Mine is going well. There are only a few of us students that stayed at camp for the weekend. Everyone else had family or friends to be with. It is nice though, we went into Victoria and did some shopping and had an AMAZING meal. (it's kinda nice to taste something rather than camp food if you know what I mean)

So we just got back from our TOFINO SURF TRIP!..boy was that an experience in it's self. I highly recommend you to do it if you get the chance. Such an amazing time. We surfed for two days and camped right on the beach. It was a great time. perfect weather for the whole 3 days. During one of our evening fires, Lelia (one of the Kaleo students) shared her testimony. It was really interesting to hear Lelia explain her story and how she has grown from the hardships in her life. I really appreciated everything she had to say. She is the type of girl that is always smiling no matter what. I love it. She brings great joy to the group. I have yet to share my testimony. I'm pretty excited to do that. I had a chance to do it on the Kayaking trip in the summer so i feel really prepared and opened to have everyone listen. So asides from surfing, we did a little shopping and before we arrived in Tofino we stopped at a Govt Voting station and I got officially vote for the first time!! It was pretty cool (Go conservatives!)

We don't have any classes this week, which is kinda nice. It's a chance for us to finish up our papers that we have been putting off for the last week or so. This is the first Thanksgiving without the fam jam. Hope you guys are having fun without me!!! :P

Today (Sunday), our church (Warmland community Church) had the service on a farm!! Yahoo for farm church. It was really cool. There was blue grass music, traditional outfits warn, pie eating contests, tug-a-wars, potato sack races, and hey bail rides. It was really fun. Shannon totally owned all at the pie eating contest. She is my hero

Hello Everyone! Just want to thank you all for your prayers that you are giving me. You guys are a blessing.

This week has been quit eventful with guest groups coming into the camp, youth group and road tour.

Warmland youth group has been going really well. I work with the grade fives girls. They are so full of energy and questions. I love it! On Saturday night our youth group combined with Duncan youth and took off to Victoria for what they call "Road Tour." It's an event for the Qwanoes campers that attended camp in the summer. kind of like a follow up from summer to see who has gotten connected with a church and has maintained a weekly attendance. We sang Qwanoe songs, played games, had some food and listened to someone speak. There was about nine girls from grades five and six that came with us (ill have to post some pictures of them, they are so adorable.) They all really enjoyed themselves and couldn't wait until next years Road Tour. I had a chance to talk with one of the girls on the way home (she was about 14) on the bus. She has been attending the senior high youth group on Sunday nights for a while now and really enjoys it. She was telling me about her summer and some of the poor choices she made throughout those few months. She had been really dishonest with her parents about what she was getting into with her friends. She had also told me about her problem with depression that she faced during the summer. The results of that was cutting her wrists. I'm not sure if it was an attention thing or she was really struggling through something, but if you could please pray for her and for me to help her through her issues. I got her cell number and plan on taking her out for coffee soon. I really feel directed to be there for her. Again, im not sure how bad the situation is but she is taking counciling for it. She says it doesn't really help...but ya.

So we are officially done our first class...well not really..we still have a lot of papers to write, but our in time class is done. It went really well. I learned a lot. Marv Penner was a professor for Spiritual Formation (Virgel he remembers you!.) He gave us a lot of tips on how to read the bible, memorization, places of solitude to be alone with God, different ways to meditate on scripture and prayer. I feel a lot more relaxed when I'm having my time with God. Before the class i would always rush through my time with God and think of as many prayer requests i could at once. He taught me how to calm down and unwind my thoughts slowy which was really awesome. Marv also talked about the differences between how guys and girls think. It made me laugh a lot for some reason. I'll have to explain the whole thing another time because it's quite interesting.

Tomorrow we are headed out on our TOFINO SURF TRIP!!!!...I'm so excited for this. Jim was telling us there is going to be 30ft waves on wednesday and thursday! Can you believe that? Ill post pics of that for sure! it will be a site to see. I have never surfed before and im really scared of fish...so i hope it goes over well haha. And on friday we start our second class with Jim Badke (our Kaleo leader) on Camp Ministry. Im really looking forward to that. Jim has a lot of interesting things to say.

This past week has been filled with amazing new experiences. I just arrived back to camp on friday from sailing on the Pacific Grace for five wonderful days. We went around Thetis Island. It was beautiful. Our first day was the only great day of sailing. The wind was really strong, but faded throughout the week. The program is called S.A.L.T.S (Sailing And Life Training Society.) It was an awesome way to get to know each other and become more of a family. The main idea of this trip was to gain a lot more sense of who each of us are and who we will become at the end of the year. I felt prepared going into this, but realized the challenge I faced physically and spiritually. Jim Badke (our leader) lead a study each night with questions given to us to form deep descriptions about one another. One of the exercises was to give someone a name. The name was supposed to represent what you think their challenge will be this year and how it will affect them at the end. The word given to me by one of the students was Sure". I Knew that was straight from God. Latley I have been struggling with knowing wether I have a firm foundation or not. Some of my friends back home reallly discourage me in a way where I dont't even want to bring up God in a conversation because of the criticism I get from them. But he said "your going to be able to let your friends know that you love God and you are SURE of that. It was extremely comforting and encouraging to hear that from someone other than myself. I could see God working on that boat all week. we worked hard as a team and loved one another. I had a couple of opportunities to talk with some girls on a deeper level. We had what they called an "anchor watch". In order to be sure that the boat doesn't move anywhere at night (other than in circles) two people go on shift for an hour and then switch off. In our conversations I mainly talked about my life, how I got to Kaleo and my Dad. It was really cool to be able to have that sense of trust. I feel that I can be open and honest with the girls here. I also had a chance to talk with a girl about her life and her family. She was telling me her family situation athome and her parents are not doing so well with eachother. Also her brother has cancer and he is only elven years old. If you could please pray for heeling and comfort for the family at this time. She is an awesome girl and I'm excited to get to know her more:)

The day after we got home from SALTS, we had a guest group arrive for the weekend. I was in the kitchen doing dishes for the most of the time. Not going to lie, that is probably my least favorite thing to do in life (mom you know what im talking about) but I had to think positive and suck it up haha! Sometimes I dont realize that it is a way to serve, just more behind the scenes.

Pastor Scott and his family are hosting a "Desert Night" at his house tonight. It will be a chance to get to know some people in my new church, so im really looking forward to that. We slso have another youth night on wednesday. I missed thelast one becuase of SALTS, so im eager to hangout with the kids. At the curch today one of the girl from youth came up and said "HEY MALAYNE" I was so impressed that she remmebred my name. I, of course being bad with names did not remeber hers.

Monday we officially start our Spirtiual Formation class. Im really excited/nervous/scared because we will get LOADS of homework. Can you please pray for strength and movtivation? My time managment skills really need improvement so I can get everything done. I need to set up a homework scheduel or something!

Well Hello Everyone! Welcome to my first official Blog posting! I' am very excited to share all of the amazing experiences that have happend to me in the past week! It seems like I have been here forever already! I' am really enjoying myself. The people that I am going to school with are awesome. We are already a tight knit family. Living by the ocean side, camp food, and amazing people that share the wonderful faith of God is quite the life.

The first day here I had got assigned to a dorm and my two roomates showed up a little while after me. Their names are Jesse and Jayme. We get a long great. They are amazing girls. The first night we played a "get to know eachother game." Kind of an ice breaker type thing. There are 14 guys and 13 girls as students this year and we a have a huge Qwanoes staff team that are here year round keeping the camp in good condition. We as students help around camp when retreats come. (working in the kitchen, doing maintenance, working on the challenge courses etc..)

I have already been "adopted" by a local chruch in Crofton (We are just five minutes outside of town.) About 6 of us out of Kaleo are attending. All of us got split into different groups and are attending different churches around the Crofton area. My Church is called Warmland Community. It is not like your usual everyday service. It is ment for non christian people, so Scott (the pastor) and the members make the church feel really welcoming, comfortable and opended to people who do not yet have a faith. I am really liking it so far. The youth group that they run is on wednesday nights for grades five through seven. The kids come from broken homes and are not very wealthy, but have good hearts. They love Stevie-G (the youth leader) and love what he does. I have only been once so far. I' am really excited to be apart of that church and I can't wait to be apart of what God is doing there.

As a form of getting to know eachther more and a heck of a challenge, our team climbed 7000 ft high to the top of a mountain!! it was a 34 km hike totalling three days to complete. We were split into groups of five. It was such an amazing experience seeing everyone work together and support eachother. A lot of us were struggling to get up that mountain, but we did it. You could really see people's hearts and how much we all care about eachother.

Yesterday we had to write a letter in our Journals. The entry had a bit of a twist. Instead of writing the letter to God from myself, we had to write it from God for myself. It deffinitly made me think about what I need to change in myself to become a better leader. I loved that I could express myself and show who I really was in four page paper.

So that about covers all of the fun filled events that is happening at Kaleo. Right now we have a big group staying for the weekend, about 275 people, so please pray for strength to get through the weekend. It will be hard work, but i am excited to serve.

Thank you all coming to my blog. i hope you enjoyed yourself. The entries will be a little different for now on and i will give you guys A LOT more to pray about haha.
